Content

Sampling methods of insect and mite pest populations. Development and application of day-degree models in crop protection. Physical and cultural pest control methods. The use of pesticides to control pests. Development of insecticide resistance (mechanisms and management). Biological and biotechnological pest control methods. The use of biological control agents, quality control protocols of commercially available products, effects on non target organisms. Microbial insecticides, technology, mode of action. The use of semiochemicals and pheromones in modern plant protection. Plant derived insecticides. Genetic control methods in insect pest management.

Learning outcomes

Upon the completion of the course students will be able to understand the new trends and methods in integrated pest management with emphasis on the potential of biological control.

Exams

Written exams at the end of the semester. Furthermore, the students will have to prepare and submit by the end of the semester and before the examination period one literature review project on a topic relevant to the objectives of the course.
