Polygnotos Vagis was born on the 14th of January 1892 in the village of Potamia on the island of Thasos. His father, Giorgos, a carpenter and woodcarver, was a native of Thasos, while his mother, Angeliki Hy- draiou, belonged to the well-known Hydriot sea-faring family, a branch of which had installed itself in Limnos. He was one of seven children.

1911 Leaves his birthplace, which is still under Turkish occupation, and emigrates to New York.
1917 Enrolls in the Cooper Union, where he studies sculpture for only six months, enlisting in the Arnerican Navy when war is declared.
1919 Obtains American citizenship. In October enrolls in the Fine Arts Institute, where he studies sculpture for about three years, under the well-known sculptors C. Boulgon and F. Aitken.
1923 Acquires a studio on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, paid for by his admirer, Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney.
1933 Moves to 104 Evergreen Ave., Bethpage, Long Island. 1963 Returns to Greece for the first time since his departure.
1965 March 15, dies in New York's Veterans Hospital. The government, honouring the artist and his work, has his coffin brought back to Greece, where he is buried with special acclaim in his own country.
